About Faye Brenner
Tour Guide – Author – Instructor
I was hooked on travel when I took my first tour as a high school junior on the proverbial "If It's Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium Tour."
With a degree in English and Theater Education, I began my career as a teacher in Fairfax County Public Schools. As a teacher I took my students on several overseas adventures. After several years of teaching and earning a Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction, I started to take on various leadership roles.
In 1993 I left formal education for a career as a residential summer camp director at Capital Camps. I had spent the previous four summers as their program director where I recognized the value of experiential education.
After I returned to the classroom in 2000, I started teaching in the International Baccalaureate program. In addition to IB English, I also taught Theory of Knowledge, a course that greatly informs my view of a student tour experience. Transforming Student Travel explores how the ways of knowing and the areas of knowledge, both central to the IB program, can transform the student tour. I ended my career in formal education as the advanced academic specialist, overseeing the IB and AP programs in the county schools.
My early retirement allowed me to pursue my third career as a tour guide and tour director. After receiving my certification at the International Tour Management Institute, I started to work as both a guide and tour manager for students and adult groups.
The typical student tour itinerary leaves very little time to get from site to site, let alone time to explore critical and creative thinking. But with a better understanding of the various ways we can make the tour more student-centered and inquiry-based, we can start to transform the experience. We can start to encourage our students to "see with new eyes."
Today, in addition to conducting tours, I am writing curriculum, training teachers and tour guides, and have written Transforming Student Travel, to be released this summer.
